Egg Harbor New Year's Parade

32st Annual Egg Harbor New Year's Parade
January 1, 2009

I Was There - By Mark Feldt

It all started on New Year's Day, 1977, when Darrel Lautenbach and his brother-in-law John rode their decorated horses through the Village of Egg Harbor. Stopping at each establishment thereafter, Darrel announcing that there was a parade. Did you see it? I was bartending at the Anchor Inn in Egg Harbor. Darrel and John stopped in. Darrel looked at me and said, "Did you see it?" I said, "See what?" "The parade", he said. "What parade", I said. "We were the parade, we just rode our horses through the village and had a New Year's Day parade. It's going to get bigger and better every year." Looking out the window, across the street, I saw two horses decorated in red, white, and blue streamers on their heads, manes, and tails. Darrel continued to inform everyone that this parade is going to get bigger and better every year! The following year we had a full-fledged parade. And every year since has provided us with all kinds of unique floats, themes, and skits, including cars, snowmobiles, etc. A lot of laughter and a little zany fun, saying goodbye to the past and welcoming in the new year. A fun parade for all. You are welcome to join in. People in costumes, kazoo bands, baton twirlers and more. To be in the parade, line up at the church. The parade runs north through the village.
Come join the fun!
